The Philippine Political Science Association Board of Trustees (PPSA-BOT) expresses its strong concern over the findings of corruption in the recent investigations on questionable flood control projects in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. These cases reveal collusion between private contractors and public officials, showing a serious misuse of public office and a betrayal of public trust.
The display of wealth by individuals implicated in these cases is especially troubling when set against the poverty and economic difficulties faced by millions of Filipinos. Corruption weakens democratic institutions, reduces the capacity of government to provide essential services, and deepens inequality in our society.
In leading the country’s professional association of political scientists, the PPSA-BOT affirms that public office must always serve the public good. Public office is public trust.
We join the calls for accountability and transparency in government, as well as stronger safeguards to prevent corruption. Integrity in public service is necessary to strengthen democracy and to protect the welfare of citizens.
Finally, we stress the need for the prosecution of those found responsible for these corrupt acts. The law must be applied firmly and fairly to restore public trust in government and uphold the principles of democratic governance.
